A work of contemporary biography has a number of potential pitfalls.  Archival material is generally not available.  Individuals who may be interviewed may still be engaged or have an ax to grind.  While the events under discussion may be fresh in our minds, the passage of time has not yet given us the gift of the “long view.”  Given these potential pitfalls, Matthew Qvortrup has succeeded in giving us a balanced and informed picture of the life and career of Angela Merkel.
