According to Jen Michalski, one of the coordinators of Starts Here!, the goal of the reading series is to highlight new and original voices. “It's kind of in the title!” says Michalski. “We try to showcase the freshest regional and national voices—not necessarily the ones on the [New York Times] bestseller list, but writers who are writing important, original, exciting (and often overlooked) fiction and nonfiction. Consider us the concierge of literature you should know about and be reading. Kind of like those book-of-the-month clubs, but around the corner.”
