Rona London reviews her pick for Book of the Day:
It is 1242 in France as we gather in a tavern to hear villagers trade stories about the adventures of three children and Gwenforte, their dog who has come back to life. Whether the children are heroes, frauds, sinners or liars is up for debate as the nun, troubadour, librarian, brewer and others tell the tale of William, an African oblate with incredible strength; Jeanne, a Christian peasant girl who has visions of the future; and Jacob, a Jewish boy who is able to heal the sick. Their journey takes us on a romp throughout medieval France and includes farting dragons, book burnings and religious persecution with kings, pickpockets, knights, and monks thrown in for good measure. The Inquisitor's Tale rekindles the tradition of oral storytelling while conveying lessons that transcend time and place.
