Rona London reviews her pick for Book of the Day:

Twelve-year-old Ben is content living on Coney Island with his adopted mom. He loves the beach and books, having befriended the local librarian, Mrs. Lorenzo. When Ben meets Mrs. Lorenzo's daughter, Halley, they immediately hit it off and quickly become inseparable. The two best friends begin to write a book together, but when his adopted mom dies suddenly and he finds out that Halley has cancer, Ben learns that sometimes stories transform midstream. The delight Halley and her family bring; the bond he has with his loyal-to-a-fault, kiss everyone on the lips dog, Flip; and Read to Rufus, the program he and Flip joined to help little kids learn to read, all bring him joy amidst the pain. With a huge heart, tremendous honesty and unrelenting optimism, When Friendship Followed Me Home is the sweetest of tearjerkers.
