Fall of Freedom: Elizabeth Atwood with Dan Rodricks: DEADLINE

Event Details

Bird in Hand Coffee & Books
11 East 33rd Street, Baltimore, MD 21218
Friday, November 21st, 2025
6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

In her new book Deadline, seasoned journalist Elizabeth Atwood offers the first comprehensive look at the history of fatal attacks against journalists in the United States between 1829 and the present.

Dan Rodricks will join her in conversation.

Atwood was inspired to explore the pressing issue of violence against American journalists after the tragic death of one of her colleagues at the Baltimore Sun, Rob Hiaasen, in the Capital Gazette shooting in 2018. Throughout, she demonstrates that distrust of the media and violence against the press in the United States are hardly new developments, and she introduces a framework to offer possible solutions.

This event will feature a conversation with the author at Bird in Hand Coffee & Books. It is a part of the Fall of Freedom, a nationwide wave of cultural events in defiance of authoritarian forces sweeping the nation.

Elizabeth Atwood spent nearly thirty years as a newspaper reporter and editor, including twenty-two years at the Baltimore Sun. Currently, Atwood is Associate Professor of journalism at Hood College in Frederick, Maryland, where her research focuses on the relationship between the news media and political and social revolutions.

Three times a week from January 1979 until January 2025, Dan Rodricks wrote a column on a sprawling range of topics for The Baltimore Sun. At 46 consecutive years, it was believed to be the longest-running local column in the U.S. Before resigning from The Sun in January 2025, he had written more than 6,600 columns.

In addition to the column, Dan was for many years a local radio and television host, and he was the creator and host of The Sun’s first podcast, Roughly Speaking.

He is the author of three books, including “Father’s Day Creek: Fly Fishing, Fatherhood and The Last Best Place on Earth” (Apprentice House 2019).

In recent years, Dan found his way into writing for the stage. His first play, “Baltimore, You Have No Idea,” has had three runs to sell-out audiences at the Baltimore Museum of Art’s Meyerhoff Auditorium. A second play, “Baltimore Docket,” premiered in February 2024, also to sell-out audiences. Both plays are based on Dan’s work as a reporter and columnist for The Sun. His third play, “No Mean City: Baltimore 1966,” will have its premier run at the BMA in March 2026.
