About Brown Memorial Tutoring Program
Founded in 1963, the mission of the Brown Memorial Tutoring Program (BMTP) is to provide individualized structured literacy instruction to Baltimore City elementary school students to build their skills, gain confidence, and awaken a love of reading.
BMTP, a free program, enrolls each year on average 80 children in the 1st to 5th grade from Mt. Royal Elementary/Middle School, Dorothy I Height Elementary School, and Baltimore Montessori Public Charter School. Teachers refer students who would benefit from one-to-one reading instruction.
Students are matched with a trained volunteer tutor, and pairs meet once a week for 75 minute sessions for 30 weeks. Tutoring takes place during the school day at the Brown Memorial Tutoring Program located in Bolton Hill. BMTP provides the transportation at no cost for students to get to and from school and tutoring.
