The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett
A sympathetic tale of black twin sisters set in Louisiana between 1940 and 1990, with plot twists, cliffhangers, racial and gender issues enough to divert even the most distressed reader. Beautiful writing reminiscent of Toni Morrison practically floats off the page. Despite being told in flashbacks and alternating points of view, this gripping story remains easy to follow. When Bennett observes how color informs personality, the blessing or curse of light skin, I feel as if I’ve been let in on a family secret. Even if racial injustice were not so newsworthy right now, The Vanishing Half would still compel as a captivating family saga. I really care about these people.
