Lift Every Voice Virtual Book Club: Carole Boston Weatherford, Unspeakable: The Tulsa Race Massacre (ages 8-12)

The Ivy is excited to welcome celebrated author Carole Boston Weatherford, whose latest book, Unspeakable: The Tulsa Race Massacre, provides a powerful look at one of the worst incidents of racial violence in our nation’s history. The book traces the history of African Americans in Tulsa’s Greenwood district and chronicles the devastation that occurred in 1921, when a White mob attacked the Black community.

This picture book sensitively introduces young readers to this tragedy and concludes with a call for a better future.

A starred Kirkus review calls the book, “A somber, well-executed addition to the history as the incident approaches its 100th anniversary.”

Since her literary debut with Juneteenth Jamboree in 1995, Carole Boston Weatherford’s books have received three Caldecott Honors, two NAACP Image Awards, an SCBWI Golden Kite Award, a Coretta Scott King Author Honor and many other honors.
