Master Story Tellers: Young Adult Fiction with Laura Shovan in Conversation with Heidi Heilig

The Ivy Bookshop

Master Story Tellers at The Ivy Bookshop is a series exploring the art and craft of storytelling. Our objective is to delve into the nature of narration, gaining insight from a range of different art forms and practitioners. Literature, journalism, film, graphic design, documentary photography, music—each is a distinct mode of communication, a means of structuring a narrative employed to share information, relate experiences and tell a story.

Laura Shovan is former editor of Little Patuxent Review and editor of two poetry anthologies. Her chapbook Mountain, Log, Salt and Stone won the inaugural Harriss Poetry Prize. Laura conducts poetry workshops for children and teens as a Maryland State Arts Council Artist-in-Education. The Last Fifth Grade of Emerson Elementary, her novel-in-verse for children, is a time capsule of one class's poems during a transformative school year.

Laura will be speaking in conversation with Heidi Heilig, author of The Girl from Everywhere.  Heidi holds an MFA from New York University in Musical Theatre Writing, and she’s written books and lyrics for shows including The Time Travelers ConventionUnder Construction and The Hole. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband, her son and their pet snake.
