The US is facing many challenges – including the global pandemic, the killings of  George Floyd and Breonna Taylor by police officers, and the recent armed protests at the Capitol in Washington, D.C.  Despite these events, the messages of the Black Lives Matter movement have found their place in national conversations and the recent change in the country’s leadership has signaled the potential for a new national trajectory.  Washington, D.C. author and historian Rohulamin Quander adds to the conversation with his new book, The Quanders: Since 1684, An Enduring African American Legacy.  This book explores his family, one of the oldest consistently documented African American families in the United States, and shares how the Quanders faced slavery then discrimination, and the positive outcomes that that have realized over time.

Rohulamin Quander was born in and resides in Washington, DC.   After earning a BA and a JD from Howard University, he pursued a career in law and retired as a Senior Administrative Law Judge for the District of Columbia. He now serves as a certified tour guide in the Greater Washington, DC area, enlightening visitors on the ways in which African Americans' historical contributions are an integral component of true American history.  Quander is the founder (1985) of the Quander Historical and Educational Society, Inc., dedicated to documenting, preserving, and sharing American history and better educating the public. He is married to renowned artist Carmen Torruella Quander with whom he shares three adult children and one grandchild.

ASL interpretation will be available for attendees.
