The Ivy is delighted to host the dynamic trio of Shirley J. Brewer, Jenny O’Grady and Edward Gillespie for an invigorating discussion of poetry, craft and book art. Expect poems in conversation, tips for ordering a manuscript, how to conceptualize a creative project, and more. Insights, Inspiration, no Intermission!

Shirley J. Brewer serves as poet-in-residence at Carver Center for the Arts in Baltimore, and has taught poetry workshops locally to writers of all ages. Her poems appear in Barrow Street, Comstock Review, Gargoyle, New Verse News, Poetry East, Slant, among other journals and anthologies. Shirley’s poetry books include A Little Breast Music (2008, Passager Books), After Words (2013, Apprentice House), and Bistro in Another Realm (2017, Main Street Rag). She was a 2020 guest on The Poet and The Poem with Grace Cavalieri, Maryland poet laureate, broadcast from the Library of Congress. Shirley received the first-ever Creativity Award from the University of Baltimore, where she earned her Master’s degree in Creative Writing/Publishing Arts in 2005.  You can find her at www.apoeticlicense.com.

A native of the Eastern Shore, Jenny O’Grady writes and makes book art in Baltimore. She is editor of UMBC Magazine and Director of Content Development at UMBC, and also editor of The Light Ekphrastic, which since February 2010 has paired hundreds of writers and visual artists from all over the world to create new works online. The Baker Artist Awards named Jenny a 2013 b-Grant winner for her book arts, which you can learn more about at jennyogrady.com.

Edward Gillespie is a Baltimore City Police officer. A 17-year veteran of the force, he has worked in patrol, operations, and education among other specializations. Currently, he is engaged in the training, teaching, and planning of the BPD’s movement towards police reform. His books of poetry include Masala Tea and Oranges, On the Later Addition of Sancho Panza, Socorro Prophecy, and Aerial Act. His most recent title is Gentrifying the Plague House, an exploration of our world of social upheaval and pandemic. He is a former teacher who holds a BA in History from George Washington University, and a Master of Liberal Arts from Johns Hopkins University.
