Come to Bird in Hand for a reading with two critically acclaimed poets from the Johns Hopkins University Writing Seminars. The Ivy is launching Andrew Motion's newest collection, Coming in to Land, and he will be reading alongside David Yezzi, reading from his forthcoming work, Black Sea.
Andrew Motion is the author of 12 books of poetry, most recently Peace Talks. He has also written biographies (of John Keats and Philip Larkin among others), and two novels (Silver and The New World) as well as a book of essays, Ways of Life. Motion was the UK Poet Laureate from 1999-2009, and is the co-founder and co- director of the Poetry Archive and Poetry by Heart; he was knighted for his services to poetry in 2009. Before joining The Writing Seminars he was Professor of Creative Writing at Royal Holloway College, University of London.
David Yezzi’s books of poetry include Azores, a Slate magazine best book of the year, and, most recently, Birds of the Air. He is the editor of The Swallow Anthology of New American Poets, foreword by J. D. McClatchy. His libretto for David Conte’s opera Firebird Motel has been performed widely and was issued on CD in 2007. His verse plays One the Rocks and Dirty Dan & Other Travesties were produced by Verse Theater Manhattan at the Bowery Poetry Club. A former director of the Unterberg Poetry Center of the 92nd Street Y in New York, he has worked as the executive editor of The New Criterion and associate editor of Parnassus: Poetry in Review
