Get an inside look at one of the literary powerhouses of our generation through the eyes of her contemporary, the brilliant novelist A.J. Verdelle. Miss Chloe, an Ivy staff favorite, is a love letter to books and a testament to the connections that books make possible. We invite you to celebrate with us on our back patio on October 6! We're delighted that Verdelle will be joined by Baruti N. Kopano of Morgan State University.
A. J. Verdelle is an award-winning novelist. Her essays are published by Crown, the Smithsonian, the Whitney Museum, Random House, and University of Georgia Press. She is a recipient of a Whiting Writer’s Award. She teaches at Morgan State University and is working on her Western novel.
Baruti N. Kopano, Ph.D. is full professor and a former department chair in the School of Global Journalism and Communication at Morgan State University. He received his Ph.D. in rhetoric and linguistics from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Baruti co-edited Soul Thieves: The Appropriation and Misrepresentation of African American Popular Culture (Palgrave Macmillan, 2015). Before joining the
Morgan faculty in 2005, he was an associate professor of mass communications and co-director of the Black Studies Program at Delaware State University.
Baruti was part of the two-person team that received funding from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) in 2013 to launch New Visions, New Voices (NVNV). NVNV garnered some of the nation’s most important emerging voices to provide a series of short and long form programming aimed at providing more diverse voices to public media utilizing a variety of distribution formats including public radio, the web, social media, and mobile devices.
Baruti’s research interests have taken him to Spain, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Cuba, Ghana, Senegal and the Gambia, where he traveled in 2016 as a participant in the Fulbright-Hays--Group Projects Abroad Program. Baruti is currently producing his first full-length film documentary, Music Liberated: Baltimore’s in the House.
