The Alexander Grass Humanities Institute brings Elnathan John to Bird in Hand. John is a Nigerian novelist, satirist and lawyer whose has been twice shortlisted for the Caine Prize for African Writing. His recent novel Born on a Tuesday, set in northern Nigeria against the backdrop of Islamic fundamentalism, was shortlisted for the Nigeria Prize for Literature, The Republic of Consciousness Prize and longlisted for the Etisalat Prize for African Literature. His non-fiction explores themes around minority rights, gender non-conformism in northern Nigeria as well as Nigerian politics. He writes a weekly satire column for a Nigerian newspaper and spends his time between Abuja and Berlin.
