Nobody wants to write a boring story! But the best way to avoid writing one is to figure out what makes a story boring in the first place. In this workshop, young writers will explore techniques for creating characters, settings, and plots that stand out from the crowd. Popular children’s author, Laura Gehl, will lead the workshop.
Laura’s most recent children’s book, I Got a Chicken for My Birthday, is a touching story about a birthday girl who wants more than anything for her Abuela to give her tickets to the amusement park. Instead she gets a chicken. But this chicken is no ordinary chicken; it has plans! With a lot of hard work, and help from lots of other animals, this chicken may just end up building the girl the best birthday gift ever!
A former teacher, Laura loves working with writers of all ages and presents frequently to students around the country. She is the author of popular picture books, including One Big Pair of Underwear and the Peep and Egg series. She also has a B.A. in psychology from Yale and a Ph.D. in neuroscience from Georgetown.
$25 fee includes a signed copy of either I Got a Chicken for My Birthday or My Pillow Keeps Moving and a journal. RSVP to 410-377-2966 or MarthaAtTheIvy@gmail.com by June 3. Grades 1-3.
Laura will also visit with fans and sign books from 11-11:30. This portion of the event is free and open to the public.
