Writers LIVE: An Evening of Baltimore Sports Legends featuring Jack Gilden and Jane Leavy

Enoch Pratt Free Library

Join us for an enlightening conversation about sports legends from experts in the field, Jack Gilden and Jane Leavy.

Drawing from more than 250 interviews, a trove of previously untapped documents, and Ruth family records, Jane Leavy breaks through the mythology that has obscured the legend and delivers the man in The Big Fella: Babe Ruth and the World He Created. Jane Leavy is an award-winning former sportswriter and feature writer for the Washington Post. She is the author of Sandy Koufax and the comic novel Squeeze Play, called “the best novel ever written about baseball” by Entertainment Weekly. She lives in Washington, D.C.

Collision of Wills looks at the complicated relationship between Don Shula, the league’s winningest coach of all time, and his star player Johnny Unitas, and how their secret animosity fueled the Baltimore Colts in an era when their losses were as memorable as their victories. Jack Gilden is a past winner of the Simon Rockower journalism award.  His work has appeared in Orioles Magazine, the Baltimore Sun and Evening Sun, and the Baltimore Jewish Times.  He also consults businesses about their messaging and teaches writing at the college level. He has written about the anti-Semitism of H.L. Mencken, the literary life of Bernard Malamud, the lost legend of "Swish" Nicholson, Joe Louis as a civil rights hero, and the profane genius of Earl Weaver. He wrote the Orioles’ 40th Anniversary Video, narrated by the legendary Jim McKay.  In addition to his journalism work, Gilden is a business consultant and teaches writing at the Community College of Baltimore County.
