Barbara Bourland in Conversation with Nate Brown: Fake Like Me

The Ivy Bookshop

The Ivy welcomes Barbara Bourland who will be in conversation with Nate Brown about her new book, Fake Like Me.

At once a twisted psychological portrait of a woman crumbling under unimaginable pressure and a razor-sharp satire of the contemporary art scene, FAKE LIKE ME is a dark, glamorous, and addictive story of good intentions gone awry, from the critically acclaimed author of I’ll Eat When I’m Dead.

After a fire decimates her studio, including the seven billboard-size paintings for her next show, a young, no-name painter is left with an impossible task: recreate her art in three months–or ruin her fledgling career. Homeless and desperate, she begs her way into an exclusive retreat in upstate New York famous for its outrageous revelries and glamorous artists. And notorious as the place where brilliant young artist Carey Logan drowned in the lake.

As the young painter works obsessively in Carey’s former studio, uncovers strange secrets and starts to fall–hard and fast–for Carey’s mysterious boyfriend, it’s as if she’s taking her place. But one thought shadows her every move: What really happened to Carey Logan?

Barbara Bourland is the author of the critically acclaimed I’ll Eat When I’m Dead, a Refinery29 Best Book of 2017 and an Irish Independent Book of the Year.  Bourland is a former freelance writer and web producer for titles at Condé Nast and Hearst, among others. She lives in Baltimore with her husband and their dogs.

Nate Brown is a fiction writer and editor whose stories and essays have appeared in the Iowa ReviewMississippi ReviewFive Chapters, the Los Angeles Review of BooksPublisher’s WeeklyLitHub, and elsewhere. He is the managing editor of the award-winning literary magazine American Short Fiction, and has received fellowships from the Wisconsin Institute for Creative Writing, the Vermont Studio Center, the Ucross Foundation, and the Maryland State Arts Council. Among other places, he has taught writing and literature at the University of Wisconsin, the George Washington University, and Georgetown University.
