Laura Sibson (The Art of Breaking Things) and Erin Stewart (Scars Like Wings) will share their experiences writing novels stemming from truth, the ins and outs of the writing process, and the (sometimes) winding path to publication. This event is free and open to the public.
In Sibson's The Art of Breaking Things, Skye Murray firmly believes that school is for surviving and weekends are for letting loose. It’s all just a countdown until graduation when she can leave town for art school. But when her mom’s ex-boyfriend reenters her world, he dredges up memories she thought she had buried once and for all—memories of how he hurt her more deeply than she knew possible. Her dream of art school feels further and further away as she struggles to find the balance between following her passion and protecting her loved ones. How can she leave home knowing her sister could be in danger? To reclaim her future, Skye must believe in herself. Even when it feels like no one else does.
After a career in undergraduate counseling, Laura Sibson pursued an MFA from Vermont College of Fine Arts. When she’s not writing in a local coffee shop, you can find her running the neighborhood streets or hiking with her dog. Raised in the Baltimore suburbs, she now lives in Philadelphia with her husband and their two sons. The Art of Breaking Things (Viking/PenguinTeen), her debut novel, is nominated for YALSA’s Best Fiction for Young Adults. Learn more by visiting laurasibson.com.
In Stewart's Scars Like Wings, Ava Lee has lost everything there is to lose. Her parents. Her best friend. Her home. Even her face. A year after the fire that destroyed her world, she is heading back to high school, convinced no one will ever see her as more than the Burned Girl. But when Ava meets a fellow survivor named Piper, Ava must decide if she's going to fade back into her scars...or let the people by her side help her fly.
Erin Stewart, author of debut novel Scars Like Wings, is a graduate of the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern. She works as a freelance writer and editor, as well as a weekly columnist in Salt Lake City. Erin grew up in the DC-area and now makes her home in Utah with her husband and three children. Her debut novel, Scars Like Wings (Delacorte/Random House), is a Junior Library Guild selection. Visit her at erinstewartbooks.com.
