The HOT L is a monthly reading at Bird in Hand on Second Sundays, is sponsored by Smartish Pace magazine and the Baltimore Poets Theater. This month's featured poets are Jalen Eutsey and Fernando Quijano III.
Eutsey holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of Miami and a Master of Fine Arts degree in Poetry from Johns Hopkins University. His poems have been published in Miscellany, Mr. Ma’am, The Rush, Into the Void and Northern Virginia Review. While in graduate school, he taught creative writing to high school and middle school students as part of the Writers in Baltimore Schools program.
Fernando Quijano III, is the former President of the Baltimore Chapter of the Maryland Writer’s Association & author of From the Bottom Up, an op-ed column featured on The Urban Twist. His work has been featured in Welter, Smile Hon, You’re in Baltimore, Baltimore Fishbowl, the poetry anthology, Life in Me Like Grass on Fire, & the speculative fiction anthology, Redlines: Baltimore 2028. An excerpt from his unpublished novel, Killing Lilith was included in the Apprentice House anthology Freshly Squeezed. He has been featured at the Baltimore Book Festival, as well as on Essential Sundays, Last Rites, Lit & Art, Spiral Staircase, Evil Grin, & New Mercury reading series. He's also appeared on Stoop Storytelling & The Signal on WYPR. In his spare time, he volunteers to lead free writing workshops for Baltimore’s underserved communities. Fernando was awarded a B grant for his writing by the William G. Baker, Jr. Memorial Fund in 2011.
