The Ivy is pleased to welcome Joe Capista and Jennifer Steinorth for an evening of poetry readings featuring their collections Intrusive Beauty and A Wake with Nine Shades.
Jennifer Sperry Steinorth is a poet, educator, interdisciplinary artist, and licensed builder. Her first full-length book, A Wake with Nine Shades, was published by Texas Review Press in 2019. A hybrid text of visual poetry/erasure is forthcoming from TRP in 2021. Her poetry has appeared in Alaska Quarterly, Beloit Poetry Journal, The Colorado Review, jubilat, Michigan Quarterly Review, Mid-American Review, New Ohio Review, Poetry Northwest, Quarterly West and elsewhere. She is the recipient of the Connecticut River Review Prize, a Writers@Work fellowship and grants from Vermont Studio Center, the Sewanee Writers Conference, and Warren Wilson College.
Steinorth began her artistic life as a dancer. She studied and performed with the Houston Ballet, the School of the Pennsylvania Ballet, and Interlochen Arts Academy. For ten years she was president and lead designer for a design-build construction company specializing in environmentally-responsible homes; she continues work as a designer/consultant and teaches English at Northwest Michigan College.
Joseph J. Capista’s collection Intrusive Beauty was selected by Beth Ann Fennelly for Ohio University Press’s 2018 Hollis Summers Poetry Prize. Poems by Capista have appeared in Agni, The Georgia Review, The Hudson Review, and Ploughshares, and he has received awards from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Maryland State Arts Council, the Sewanee Writers’ Conference, and the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference. He holds an MFA from Warren Wilson College, teaches at Towson University, and lives with his family in Baltimore.
