The Ivy is pleased to welcome Dan Christian to discuss Educating the Eye (I): Essays from High School Students Inspired by Dante.
Poet and Dante translator, John Ciardi, teaches us that “to read Dante is to educate the eye. We can see better after having looked through Dante’s eyes.” This recently released collection of personal essays by Gilman/BMS/RPCS “fellow READing pilgrims” constitutes a potent and inspiring signal that people of all ages who read Dante’s Comedy carefully and respond courageously can sharpen their eye as well as enhance their I. Those who attend will be welcomed into an honest hour of honoring the power of Dante’s journey, a pilgrimage grounded in “serious joy.” Indeed, the nutrition available in these essays can motivate all hungry people to feed themselves by READing Dante’s Comedy which is, without question, a healthy literary slice of the “bREAD of angels.”
In addition to Dante talk, this event will include a very special treat. Bob and Pam Ortiz (from The Pam Ortiz Band, formally Terra Nova) will add live music to our Dante evening, capturing within their lovely musical net the spirit and power of “nostra vita” (our life).
Daniel Christian taught high school English/Religion for 43 years from 1976-2019. He also coached basketball each winter season. The most cherished gift of his life, however, arrived in the surprise opportunity to offer a senior elective on Dante’s Comedy at Gilman School each year starting in 1982. It also should come as no surprise that Dante often helped inform the experience of “trying to try” hard at PLAYing basketball well. That journey towards solid defensive teamwork, for example (“nostra vita” at its best...), is a long and arduous one, mirroring in interesting ways Dante’s travels toward and into the “big light.” The two quests are, hands down, worth the effort. It is easy to contend that the Comedy, above all else, tells a love story, and adding to that description, each basketball practice ended with a team-generated, passionate shout to the heavens: Defense: Love it.
