Introducing Baltimore Books Through Bars!

Event Details

Bird in Hand Coffee & Books
11 East 33rd Street, Baltimore, MD 21218
Friday, February 13th, 2026
6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
Help us launch Baltimore Books Through Bars — a new volunteer-run program sending free books to incarcerated people across Maryland.

We’ll gather for a conversation about why access to reading material matters as a vital—and often impeded—harm-reduction tool against the violence of incarceration.

You’ll also find stacks of books from our wish list available to purchase and donate on the spot.

With your support, we aim to raise enough to cover the first month of postage, allowing BBTB to begin accepting and fulfilling book requests right away.

Panelists will include:

Grace Kearney, founder of Baltimore Books Through Bars.

Sara Citroni, the Director of Peer Services at PREPARE (PREpare for PArole and REentry), a Maryland-based nonprofit with a mission of empowering people to make their best case for parole and develop strong reentry plans. After serving nearly three decades in the correctional system, Sara was released in June 2022 by the Juvenile Restoration Act. Since then, she has taken the lead on developing PREPARE for Success, the post-release portion of the organization’s programming. She firmly believes in paying it forward to others still in the system.

Bobby Pittman is a Peer Recovery Specialist at the University of Baltimore’s Second Chance College Program, which offers postsecondary education and reentry support to incarcerated students at Jessup Correctional Institution. Bobby, who was in the program’s first cohort, graduated with his B.A. in Human Services Administration in 2024 and is now pursuing a M.A. in Nonprofit Management and Social Entrepreneurship at the University of Baltimore.

Riyan Williams is a 2023 graduate of the University of Baltimore Second Chance College Program. He holds a B.A. in Human Services Administration.
