Poets In The Gardens: Donald Berger, Chris Mason, Terence Winch

About the Panelists:

• Donald Berger, Donald Berger grew up in New York and Massachusetts, and is the author of The Long Time, a bilingual edition in English and German (Wallstein Press, Goettingen, Germany), Quality Hill (Lost Roads Publishers) The Cream-Filled Muse (Fledermaus Press), Or Purchase a Star, and Pizza Necklace (Foundlings Press)., His poems and prose have appeared in The New Republic, Slate, Conjunctions, The New York Times, New American Writing, Colorado Review, Fence, Ironwood, The Iowa Review, The Massachusetts Review, and other magazines including some from Berlin, Leipzig, Budapest, Hong Kong and mainland China. A recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship, he’s travelled widely in Europe and East Asia and has taught at Montgomery College and the University of Maryland, where he helped direct the MFA Program in Creative Writing. He currently teaches writing at Johns Hopkins.

• Chris Mason, Chris Mason has been a member of the Baltimore poetry community for five decades. His books include Something Something Morning (Blabbermouth, Baltimore, 2020), Hum Who Hiccup (Narrow House, Baltimore, 2011), Click Poems (shabby editions, London, 1982) and Poems of a Doggy (pod books, Baltimore, 1977). He is a member of two bands: The Tinklers, who had three records released by Shimmy Disc in the 80’s and 90’s, and Old Songs. The Old Songs group translates archaic Greek poetry and puts it to music. He lives in Lauraville with his wife Ann and their three chickens.

• Terence Winch, Terence Winch’s latest book, That Ship Has Sailed, was published in 2023 as part of the Pitt Poetry Series (University of Pittsburgh Press). He is the author of eight earlier poetry collections. Winner of an American Book Award and a Columbia Book Award, he has also written a young adult novel called Seeing-Eye Boy and two story collections, Contenders and That Special Place. His work has appeared in many journals and in more than 50 anthologies. He is the recipient of an NEA Poetry Fellowship and a Gertrude Stein Award for Innovative Writing, among other honors. A book of occasional love poems called It Is As If Desire will be out in 2024 from Hanging Loose Press. Terence Winch is the editor of the Best American Poetry’s “Pick of the Week” feature. Also a musician, songwriter, and recording artist, he has played traditional Irish music all his life, and has two new recordings out in 2023: Celtic Thunder Live in Concert and The Irish Riviera: Songs & Tunes from Irish America with The Winch Family Band.
